Accidental fire in house claims four lives

Posted by PicasaPhoto M.Ahiraj
BELLARY: Two women and two girls died of burns and asphyxiation after fire broke out accidentally in their house in Bapuji Nagar here on Saturday. Another girl, who also suffered burns, managed to escape. She has been admitted to hospital. Although the exact reason for the fire was not immediately known, it is suspected that kerosene stored in the kitchen might have triggered the problem.
Asphyxiation The police said that immediately after the fire broke out, the victims sustained 30 per cent burns, after which they ran into the bathroom for safety, but died on account of
asphyxiation. On being informed of the incident, fire-fighting personnel rushed to the spot and doused the flames. The police found all the four bodies in the bathroom. Superintendent of Police Seemant Kumar Singh told The Hindu that a kerosene barrel stored in kitchen might have caught fire accidentally while cooking was on.
Detailed investigation He said a detailed investigation would be held into the incident. The deceased were identified as Alambi (65), Ghousia (06), Nazima (16) and Sabiya (10). Mehatabi (8), a neighbour’s child, who had come to play with her friends in that house, suffered burns and has been admitted to hospital. The people of the locality have expressed anger over the alleged late arrival of the ambulance and fire-fighting personnel at the spot. “Within minutes of the fire, we called 108 as well as the Fire and Emergency Services personnel. But they arrived an hour later. Ministers and others in the Government have been quite pompous while speaking of the benefits of these schemes, but it all seems an eyewash. Had the fire-fighting personnel and the ambulance arrived early, the victims may have survived with timely treatment,” felt S. Ramanjaneyulu, a resident of that area.
