Agonising Wait for Six-year-old Abhishek's Body

BANGALORE, Jun 3: More than two days later and still counting, the body of six-year-old Abhishek Prakash, who was washed away in an open drain on Sunday night in Lingarajpuram, has still not been recovered.
Rescue efforts spread close to 10 km away from the boy’s modest house on Lokesh Tent Road.

The search was called off for the day around 7 p.m. on Tuesday after the squads of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and the Fire Department worked all day scouring the drainage lines till the Nagavara Tank in vain.

S. Puttuswamy, Additional Commissioner (East), BBMP, told The Hindu he would depute four additional batches of pourakarmikas on Wednesday to resume the search even if it meant extending it to the raja kaluve (main stormwater drain).

Forty eight hours on, Abhishek untraced

The six-year-old was washed away on Sunday night

The search for the body of Abhishek, a six-year-old boy who fell into a drain on Sunday night turned unfruitful on Tuesday as well. Fire fighters along with sanitary workers are continuing the search, even 48 hours after the tragedy.

Men and machines of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike and the Fire Department spared no efforts in the search. They dug the culvert on the main drain on the Lokesh Tent Road, but could not find the body. The search team then went to dig out another culvert. “We are trying our best to trace the body. We fear the body might have reached Nagavara lake. However, the search operation will not be halted until the body is traced,” said the BBMP Joint Commissioner (East Zone) S Puttaswamy. He added that the boy was swept away in seconds as there was huge flow of water in the drains owing to heavy rains on Sunday. The BBMP has paid an immediate compensation of Rs one lakh to the family of the deceased. This incident has come as a wake up call for the BBMP, as two have already fallen victims even as moonsoon is yet to set in in full form. Puttaswamy said that instructions have been given to the sanitary workers to discharge their duties diligently and cover the manholes and stormwater drains properly.

Bangalore: A six-year-old boy was washed away in an overflowing drain in Bangalore on late Sunday evening following heavy rains.
The police said Abhishek was walking with his mother near his house in Lingarajpuram when he slipped into the drain and was washed away. After about three hours the police and the fire department officials could fish out the body of Abhishek. Residents of the area expressed anger at the way the officials had carried out the search operation. “They came with no equipment,” locals said.
Abhishek’s uncle Keshav Kumar said: “The Police and the Fire Department officials arrived only after we informed the Commissioner’s office.”
Rainwater entered the makeshift shed that houses the High Grounds Police Station. The police personnel covered the computer in the police station with a raincoat. Files and books were covered with plastic sheets.
According to the control room staff of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, many parts of the city were inundated. Trees fell in Indiranagar and Lingarajpuram.
Due to water-logging, there was traffic jam on the Lalbagh Road, the Old Madras Road and in many parts of Jayanagar.
The officials of the Meteorological Department said at 8.30 p.m. on Sunday, 53.4 mm rainfall was recorded.
Minimum temperature in the city was 25 degree Celsius while the maximum temperature was 29 degree Celsius. Areas surrounding the Bengaluru International Airport saw close to 41 mm of rainfall.
