Mock drill marks Disaster Management Day

There was a loud explosion at the junior college premises in the city at 1 pm on Tuesday.


Confusion gripped the place as nobody had a clue on what must be done. Soon, members of the fire and emergency department got into action, much to the relief of everybody present.
It was a mock drill organised to mark the National Disaster Management Day, by the fire and emergency services department, Home Guards, medical staff and the police.
It was a demonstration by the staff of these departments on what needs to be done in such situations and how to rescue affected people.
Steps to be taken when there is a disaster situation in multi-storied buildings or when there is a fire mishap were also demonstrated.
Those present were all praise for the ‘timely action’ of the disaster management team.

Mock fire drills educate students

Bidar: As a part of National Disaster Prevention Day here on Tuesday, various security agencies performed mock drills to educate schoolchildren on how to respond during emergencies.

The district fire office recreated a fire-fighting scene on the Sai Adarsha School premises. They set fire to makeshift huts and “rescued” people inside.

They also displayed and explained the various equipment used in fighting fires.

Home Guards demonstrated how people are evacuated from a building after a bomb explosion while a bomb squad explained how a bomb is detected and detonated.

Ambulance service
Health Department personnel showed how the Arogya Kavacha ambulance service reacts when it receives an emergency call.

Additional Superintendent of Police B.S. Marthurkar presented prizes to the winners of essay-writing and painting competitions.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Sameer Shukla inaugurated a rally at the police parade grounds.

Superintendent of Police N. Satish Kumar, Assistant Superintendent of Police S.Y. Ravikumar, Home Guards Commandant Jaibheem Solapure and District Fire Officer Amrit Chimkod were also present.

BANGALORE: The NCC and NSS unit of Kristu Jayanti College, in collaboration with the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services Department and Home Guards and Civil Defence hosted a mock drill on disaster management for students, staff and residents of K. Narayanapura, on the college premises on Monday.

DHARWAD: The National Disaster Reduction Day was observed on Sunday by organising an awareness rally and a mock drill on handling fire accident on the RLS High School ground here. The Dharwad district Home Guards and the Fire and Emergency Services Department had jointly organised the programme. The rally on creating awareness on precautionary measures to be initiated during a natural calamity or a fire accident began from the office of the Deputy Commissioner and concluded at the RLS High School. The participants, including women Home Guards, held placards and banners with messages highlighting steps to be taken during natural calamities and man-made disasters. Pamphlets explaining steps to be taken during disasters/accidents were distributed to the public. After the rally Home Guards and Fire and Emergency Services personnel conducted a mock drill on how to handle a fire accident. The personnel “saved” many persons who were stuck in a structure that had caught fire and also put off the fire, as part of the drill.

Fire forces demonstrate their damage-control skills in Bidar

BIDAR: As part of observing National Day for Disaster Reduction, personnel of Fire and Emergency Services, Bidar, on Sunday held a mock demonstration of damage-control skills used in times of natural and manmade disasters. The demonstration was held on Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences(BIMS) premises and was attended by a large number of people. It was held to create awareness among people on steps needed to be taken in emergency situations. Fire force personnel showed the use of two-rope parallel method, chain-knot method, single-rope method, two-point suspension method, and hinge-ladder method and administration of first-aid during rescue operations. Home Guards, Bidar, Commandant Mahammed Naimuddin told The Hindu here on Sunday that the mock demonstration programme was arranged on directions from Home Guards, Bangalore, Commandant, Jija Madavan Harisingh. He said that manmade disasters were happening day after day and the prevailing situation needed awareness on handling these disasters effectively. Secretary of Shaheen Educational Institution, Bidar, Abdul Qadeer said, “I have asked students of the institution to observe the demonstration to have knowledge on handling emergency situations.” A visitor, Mallikarjun, said he was thrilled by the demonstration of skills by the fire force personnel. Additional Superintendent of Police G. M. Yatanoor; BIMS director B.O. Hanumanthappa; and officials of the Karnataka State Reserve Police, Bidar, and District Armed Reserve Police were present. The fire force personnel took out a rally from the Police Parade Grounds to BIMS in the city. Mr. Yatanoor flagged off the rally.

Preparing people in the event of an earthquake

MANGALORE: It all started at 11.40 a.m. on Saturday with the menacing sound of a siren that seemed straight out of a World War II movie. Within seconds the gloomy environs of the Deputy Commissioner’s office became the centre of action. For the first few seconds after the siren went off, all the people present crouched for cover. After a minute they trooped out of their offices in single file with handkerchiefs covering their mouths and noses.Even before the people on the higher floors came down, the Fire and Emergency Services personnel charged into the building with ropes, ladders, axes, cylinders and hoses. Soon after people fit enough to make it on their own left the building, the “injured” were brought down. Some on stretchers were lowered to the ground from the balconies on the first and second floors with the help of ropes.

Foolproof system

The Fire and Emergency Services personnel displayed just how foolproof their system was. The look of relief was palpable on the faces of the “injured” as they were set down. Within minutes the first ambulances descended on the scene, sirens blaring. Paramedics from the Health Department and K.M.C Hospital took care of the injured. It soon came to light that it was actually a mock earthquake preparedness drill organised by the district Disaster Management Cell in association with the Fire Department, Home Guards and the Health Department. The exercise was completed in 40 minutes. Addressing the media after the event, Deputy Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao expressed satisfaction over the manner in which the exercise was conducted. He said that similar exercises would be carried out in other high-rise buildings in the city in the next few weeks.

Chief Fire Officer of the district H.S Varadarajan, who coordinated the event, however, said that there was a lot more to be achieved.

The event began at 9 am. Students of MS Ramaiah Hospital participated. Three bombs exploded. Bomb detection and disposal squad rushed to the spot. The injured were taken to the hospital.Hundreds of people, who were unaware of the mock drill, gathered near the ground after hearing the explosion. Traffic movement was affected for a while.Lieutenant General RJ Bharadwaj told media after the event that the mock drill aimed at creating awareness among the citizens as to how they should provide first aid treatment to the injured and how they should interact with the police and the government whenever a bomb explodes.The event began at 9 am.
