Cotton bales gutted in a fire that broke out in a godown in KG Halli police limits on Friday evening. An electric short circuit is said to have caused the fire. People who spotted smoke billowing from the godown informed the police. Six fire tenders were pressed into service which doused the fire in 30 minutes. The loss is still being estimated.

BANAGALORE: The huge giant wheel started rolling and within seconds, it stopped with three jerks. Over 25 people who were at a height of about 50 feet from the ground started looking downwards excitedly unaware of the fact that they would be suspended mid air for the next one and half hours. The inauguration of the amusement park at the National Consumer Fair in Puttenahalli, JP Nagar 6th phase on Sunday evening, turned into a panic evening when the giant wheel got stuck. The giant wheel has three drive wheels each on both the sides. It had taken just two cycles when one of the drive wheels got punctured. After three or four jerks, the giant wheel came to a screeching halt. Although the wheel was stuck at 6.30 pm, the fire services could arrive on the spot after more than an hour delay due to traffic diversion at the ring road-Puttenahalli junction. "But for the narrow lanes and traffic jams on the road, we could have reached there pretty early," said B G Chengappa, joint director of Fire Services. There was drama in the air as the fire personnel as well as the people on the ground and on the wheel had tense moments. "For a moment, there was panic and screaming. Later, there was a dead silence," said Gautham, one of the organizers. The entire rescue operation took 40 men from fire services and one and half hours. Initially, the fire personnel used their vehicle ladders to bring down the people, but it did not reach the upper carriages. Then they had to use the rope ladders to rescue the people on the top. Cheers rent the air when eight-year-old Raghavi (8), the first one to be brought down, reached the ground safely. She looked very poised and said that she was not scared while on the giant wheel. Mariam from Mumbai, who waited for over an hour for her daughter and granddaughter to be rescued, was too shocked to react. Though the fair opened four days ago, due to rain threat, the organizers decided to postpone the opening of amusement games to Sunday. "The incident took place at around 6.30 pm. We have safety ladders on either side of the wheel, but we did not want to take any chances and decided to call the fire tenders," Goutham said. Meanwhile, Chengappa said they would initiate a probe into the episode.

Mumbai, June 02A major fire broke out in one of the units at an industrial estate in Lalbaug on Monday afternoon. Three firemen were injured during the fire-fighting operations.
The fire broke out in one of the galas in the old Kamani mill compound around 1.30 pm. “The oil mill is shut since 1995 and there are eight to 10 galas in it that have been sub-leased. Edible oil was stored in one of the galas. There is also a garment gala, a studio, shaving brush packaging unit, interiors company and a mineral water packaging unit. The cause of the fire is not yet known,” said DCP D K Phadtare, Zone V.
The industrial estate is adjacent to Peru Chawl. “Peru Chawl has been sold to a private builder,” said DCP D K Phadtare, Zone V.
It took more than two hours to put out the fire. “These may be unauthorised galas. There are many lofts. The mill is a 100 x 120 sq ft area without any fire safety measures in place. The exact loss of property will take time to assess,” said Chief Fire Officer A V Sawant.
A Fire department official said assistant fire officer Barahaat and two others — Krushant Kamble and Padmakar Ragunath from Sewree fire station — were taken to KEM hospital. “Barahaat fell from a makeshift shaft and fractured his hand. The other two have bruises on their back,” the official said.
Residents of Peru Chawl, on hearing the news of the fire, ran out with some of their belongings and cooking gas cylinders. “We had just finished our lunch and were about to lie down when we saw the smoke coming out,” said Shobha Shelar, a resident.
“I lost everything. Lights worth Rs 2 lakh and other valuables are charred now,” said Chanda Hublikar, one of the sub-tenants of Kamani mill.
“Khimchand Chawla, a tenant on the mill land, sub-leased the land to the present gala owners. We called up his son, he informed us that Khimchand was admitted in KEM hospital. But when we went to KEM, we learnt that he was shifted to a private hospital. Till late evening, we failed to get in touch with him,” said Senior Police Inspector Ramesh Bhikulal Poman of Kalachowkey Police Station.
The Chawlas could not be reached for comment.
Adjacent to the Kamani mill are two huge godowns rented to an oil packaging unit and a printing and binding company. “The oil packaging unit has 12 huge oil containers and many lubricants packs. A major tragedy was averted. If this godown had caught fire there would have been casualties,” said Nitin Ghadik, a resident of the chawl.

NAVI MUMBAI: Memories of Delhi's ghastly Uphaar fire tragedy, which claimed 59 lives back in 1997, were uppermost on the firemen's minds when they arrived at the City Centre mall on Palm Beach road here at 9 am and saw smoke billowing out of the four-storeyed structure. The inferno was in the food court adjacent to the Cinemax multiplex on the fourth floor. The first show was to begin at 10 am and the mall too was yet to open. Although an entire wing of seven food stalls was gutted, no one was injured. Fortunately, the fire did not spread to the multiplex. Firemen refused to go on record as to the likely cause of the blaze. However, unofficially, they indicated that electrical problems had sparked it off. The incident has brought to light serious shortcomings and irregularities regarding fire safety in the four-storey mall. Navi Mumbai fire chief R T Mhatre told TOI: "The mall's sprinkler systems, where the food court is located, were not on ‘auto mode', which is why the fire flared up and destroyed seven outlets in the food court. If the system could have detected either the smoke or the fire, the water sprinklers would have automatically been triggered and extinguished the fire at the very outset." The fire brigade got the first call from City Centre at 8.50 am on Wednesday; 12 fire engines were rushed over the next one hour. One wing of the food court, made largely of plastic, was gutted and furniture, flooring and mini-pantries reduced to cinders. The food outlets were still smouldering at noon, long after the fire had been doused. The shops were charred beyond recognition. Worse, shops on floors below the food court had their electrical connections badly damaged. "Apart from the faulty sprinklers, we had earlier also noticed that the four fire/emergency exits of each level of the mall were not totally clear of obstacles. On the first floor for example, the Croma shop has come up right at the spot where the fire/emergency exit should be," said Mhatre. He added that because of these discrepancies, the mall has still not been given the final NOC from the fire department. "At present we have only given a provisional and conditional NOC to City Centre; the final NOC will only be given after the mall meets all the fire safety requirements. It is indeed fortunate that there were no customers in the mall at the time of fire," Mhatre said. The mall houses 113 shops and has been operational for the last six months on a conditional NOC from the Navi Mumbai fire brigade. City Centre general manager Shahul H Kader disagreed with Mhatre. "Our sprinkler systems are fully functional, there is no doubt about it. All the four fire exits on each level are also open." Asked why the Croma showroom had come up where one of the fire/emergency exits should be, Kader said: "Yes, one of the exits does pass through the Croma shop; but we will alter it soon as per the fire department's guidelines in order to procure the final NOC."

Readymade dress materials worth several lakhs of rupee were gutted in a fire mishap at a garment factory in Electronic City Police limits on Wednesday night. However, no one was injured in the incident as the factory was closed when the mishap occurred. Electric short circuit is stated to be the reason. According to sources, one the security guards of Aravind Mills near Koodlu Gate saw smoke emanating from one of the godowns. He immediately alerted the factory officials. The fire spread to other godowns in no time and reduced the readymade dress materials to ashes.

Another fire: In another fire accident, computers, furniture and other materials were gutted in an office on M M Road in the Cubbon Park police limits on Wednesday afternoon. However, the reason for the accident is yet to be ascertained. According to the police, the fire broke out at around 1.15 pm in the office of Stivant India Private Limited located on the third floor of Raheja Chambers. One of the air conditioners, had developed some problem which was repaired on Wednesday afternoon. Within half an hour after the AC was repaired, it is said to have triggered the fire mishap. The incident was immediately reported to Karnataka Fire & Emergency Service (KF & ES). Six fire brigade and one rescue van were pressed into service to put out the fire. The officials put off the fire around 4 pm, added the police.

The fire officials said ready-for-despatch branded clothing got destroyed in the fire. “Though the packed clothing materials were kept high on the racks, the leaping flames devoured whatever came in the way. Most racks inside the godown got burnt. The cause of the fire is not known yet,’’ the officer added. The Electronic City police have registered a case.
