DAVANGERE: Eight huts were reduced to ashes in a fire in the Hosa Chikkavanahalli area on the outskirts of Davangere on Tuesday night. However, no casualties were reported as the families, mostly labourers, had gone to work in fields along with their children. According to sources in the Fire Services and Police departments, the fire started in a hut and spread to others close by. By the time police and fire personnel arrived at the spot, the huts with thatched roofs were burnt completely. Foodgrains, clothing, bicycles and other belongings were destroyed in the fire. Davangere tahsildar B.R. Harish, along with Revenue officials, rushed to the spot. Mr. Harish told The Hindu here on Wednesday that each family had been given 20 kg of rice and the district administration had built sheds to accommodate them temporarily. Compensation would be given to them on Thursday, he said.
