Eleven workers suffered injuries when a building under construction collapsed in the near Bommasandra Industrial Area, late afternoon on Tuesday.

The workers who were doing centring work at the new building coming at the Rasi Granites campus, along the Jigani-Hebbugodi Link Road, were trapped under the rubble. They were pulled out by the Fire and Emergency Service personnel and police. The injured workers were admitted to three private nursing homes. Five of them were kept under observation as they had suffered fractures or head injuries. However, none of them were serious. According to police officers at the spot, the steel mesh at the top collapsed forcing the supporting steel bars to give way, trapping the workers. Nearly 60 labourers on site witnessed to the collapse. The victims, mostly from Andhra Pradesh and North Karnataka said they were caught unawares when the steel bars collapsed. “I was working on top of the steel bars when it fell through. I was trapped under the bars and was brought here by some people,” said a groggy Sharanappa, from Gadag district. Vinod (17) from Andhra Pradesh was getting water and food for his father who was working atop the steel bars when it came crashing on him. The teenager escaped with minor injuries. Kumar, a construction labourer, said that while walking below the centring construction work, he saw the steel bars slowing collapsing. Police said they will register a case of negligence against labour contractor Marudappa and the overall contractor Shankarppa from Hebbugodi.

Eight firemen get President's Medal

BANGALORE: The President has awarded President's Fire Service Medal for Distinguished and Meritorious Service to eight officers of the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services.

Fire breaks out in warehouse

MANGALORE: Fire Services personnel took nearly an hour to put out a fire that broke out in a warehouse in the Jain Basadi area near Mukhyaprana temple here on Saturday. According to Fire Services officials, a two-storeyed warehouse located at Bajil Keri caught fire around 3 p.m. on Saturday. The warehouse belongs to M. Giriraj. The cause of the fire or where it started was not yet clear. The official quoted Mr. Giriraj as saying that goods worth Rs. 60 lakh were stored in the building and estimated the loss at Rs. 20 lakh.

Officials stop leakage of ammonia in Bangalore Dairy

Leakage of amonium at a maintenance unit of Bangalore Dairy unit here today was stopped immediately after it was detected, official sources said. Fireforce officails stopped the leakage within 15 minutes after it was noticed, Chief Fire Officer E U Erappa told PTI. Three engineers who were inside the unit when the leak was noticed were immediately evacuated, he said.

Chemical unit gutted in City



A major fire at a godown in Commercial Street on Sunday evening destroyed materials worth several lakhs of rupees. As many as 50 firemen with 20 fire tenders struggled for more than four hours to extinguish the fire. However, there were no casualties.
The fire at the three-storey godown of Bright and Co, a varnish manufacturer, on Veerapillai Street near Commercial Street police station, destroyed paint thinner and other highly inflammable chemicals stored in barrels, said police. Workers on the ground floor of the godown heard noise akin to explosions around 4.40 pm. They came out running and informed the police who immediately summoned the fire force. “We received the fire alert at 4.50 pm. We sent only three fire tenders as we were told that the fire was in a hotel. The firemen were shocked to see a manufacturing unit in huge flames. We summoned seven more fire tenders as it was a major fire,” said Deputy Director Fire (Tech) B K Hampagol. “A few minutes after the firemen swung into action, there were nearly four blasts. We summoned 20 more fire tenders as would could not contain the fire. We decided to use foam, which is used only during major fire incidents to put off the fire. It took nearly four hours for us to extinguish the fire,” he added. Located in a highly congested area, the godown had only two small fire extinguishers. No worker in the unit was trained to use the fire extinguishers. Moreover, the owners had stored small containers and packets on staircase, which impeded access to the location of the fire, Hampagol added. He urged members of public to alert the fire department about such manufacuring units whcih should not be located in densely populated areas. The police said fire officials said cause for the incident is stated to be electric short circuit or a burning beedi butt.

Fire engines had to wait

BANGALORE: While the 21 fire tenders, despatched from 15 fire stations across the city, were able to reach the entrance of Commercial Street within no time, it took no less than 20 minutes to navigate through the weekend crowd in this shopping' area. Irked by the lack of any traffic control or restrictions imposed on this road, hardly half-a-kilometre from the site of a major fire accident, Fire and Emergency Services personnel complained to the Police Department. Weekend shoppers and traders went about business as usual for a good 30 minutes after news about the fire had spread. Fire engines were seen waiting near Commercial Street, Jumma Musjid Road and Veerapillai Street for cars and motorists to clear out.

Fire in fibre water tank

Bangalore : A fire broke out at the backyard of a factory in Bommasandra industrial area at 9.30 am on Monday, destroying fibre water tanks worth lakhs of rupees. Firefighters could not ascertain the cause of the blaze. A large number of new water tanks were stored at the site. All the fibre tanks evaporated due to extreme heat. By the time seven firefighters extinguished the raging inferno, the entire backyard was charred.

Blast again at Gottigere factory

Three persons were injured when a chemical drum blew up at a barrel cleaning unit in Gottigere on Monday. Last week, in a similar blast, a person was charred to death and two others were injuries at the same unit. The intensity of the Monday blast was low. The unit was being shifted and labourers were taking a lunch break by cooking biryani near a barrel containing lubricants. The heat from the cooking pot ignited the barrel. Police said the pollution control board had told KTC Enterprises to shut down after last week's blast.

Fire in Shimoga godown causes extensive damage



HUGE LOSS: A major fire broke out in a godown on the premises of Tunga Rice Mill in Shimoga on Thursday.
SHIMOGA: A major fire broke out at a godown situated on the premises of the Tunga Rice Mill near the Bus Stand on B.H. Road on Thursday causing extensive damage. The fire has been attributed to a short circuit. It was brought under control around noon on Thursday after personnel of the fire brigade worked nearly for ten hours. The estimated loss on account of the fire has been put around Rs. 50 lakh. The entire stock at the godown containing commercial gas cylinders, rice bags, power generators, electrical components, edible oil containers, oil seeds and match boxes was reduced to the ashes. The cylinders exploded one by one as the fire started spreading causing a deafening sound around. The fire at the godown reportedly belonging to Vijay Sales Corporation was noticed around 1.30 a.m.

Lack of fire fighters
As only three fire fighters were available locally, additional fire fighters were requisitioned from Birur, Kadur, Bhadravati and Sagar.
