Eleven workers suffered injuries when a building under construction collapsed in the near Bommasandra Industrial Area, late afternoon on Tuesday.

The workers who were doing centring work at the new building coming at the Rasi Granites campus, along the Jigani-Hebbugodi Link Road, were trapped under the rubble. They were pulled out by the Fire and Emergency Service personnel and police. The injured workers were admitted to three private nursing homes. Five of them were kept under observation as they had suffered fractures or head injuries. However, none of them were serious. According to police officers at the spot, the steel mesh at the top collapsed forcing the supporting steel bars to give way, trapping the workers. Nearly 60 labourers on site witnessed to the collapse. The victims, mostly from Andhra Pradesh and North Karnataka said they were caught unawares when the steel bars collapsed. “I was working on top of the steel bars when it fell through. I was trapped under the bars and was brought here by some people,” said a groggy Sharanappa, from Gadag district. Vinod (17) from Andhra Pradesh was getting water and food for his father who was working atop the steel bars when it came crashing on him. The teenager escaped with minor injuries. Kumar, a construction labourer, said that while walking below the centring construction work, he saw the steel bars slowing collapsing. Police said they will register a case of negligence against labour contractor Marudappa and the overall contractor Shankarppa from Hebbugodi.
