Defence canteen gutted in blaze

Goods worth crores were destroyed in a fire that engulfed the building housing the military canteen near Trinity Circle
Even before the Carlton Tower fire tragedy could fade from public memory, athree-storied building housing the military stores department, popularly known as the military canteen, located near Trinity Circle off M G Road caught fire on Tuesday noon. According to preliminary reports, goods worth around Rs 10 crore, including household items, consumables and electronic items, were destroyed in the blaze, which is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit on the second floor. There were no casualties. The military canteen stores supplies for serving and retired defence personnel throughout the country.Jija Harisingh, DG, Fire and Emergency Services, who visited the spot said the building caught fire because of the flammable materials stored there. “Though fire extinguishers were installed in the building, they were not enough to contain the fire,” she said. Insiders suspect foul play in the incident. Police commissioner Shankar Bidari said a case of accidental fire had been registered at the Halasur police station. “We will register a case under IPC 436 if any foul play is found during investigation,” he said.As many as 25 fire tenders were pressed into service and it took four hours to contain the blaze. The fire force was hampered in its work by the burnt plastic wrapping of the stored items, which made the dousing operations more difficult.Traffic was hit as no vehicle was allowed between the ASC Centre and Trinity Church from 3.30 pm to 7 pm, so as to allow for the movement of the fire tenders. This caused a major traffic jam on the road leading towards the old airport.

Bangalore: Fire breaks out in MG Road

Bangalore, Mar 23: Even as the fire in Kolkata's Park Street rages on, a fire broke out in Bangalore's MG Road.As per the inputs, the fire has hit the Army Canteen in Trinity Circle, located in the heart of the silicon city.Fourteen fire tenders have been rushed to the spot.More details are awaited. This comes even as the flames engulf the multi-storey building in Kolkata. Six are feared dead in the mishap.Bangalore has recently witnessed a similar incident at Carlton Towers on the busy Old Airport Road on Feb 23.

Fire at CSD canteen

A major fire broke out at the Ministry of Defence CSD canteen store depot on Trinity Church Road, old Airport Road on Tuesday evening.

Around 3.50 pm, thick smoke was noticed from the second floor of the three storied building. Immediately, 24 fire tenders with 100 firemen rushed to the spot. The firemen fought for nearly four hours and brought the situation under control. No casualty was reported.Sources said, this depot is the CSD main storage house for the entire Karnataka State. It is from here the house hold items are distributed to various outlets. Crores of rupees worth household items from toothpaste to high end electronic gadgets were gutted in the accidental fire. Luckily, liquor was stacked in the adjoining building and if the fire had spread things would be worse. The cause of the fire is zeroed in on the short circuit in the lift but the fire experts have bought time to ascertain the exact reason. Malfunction of the fire safety equipment gave a tough time to the firemen and water tank also was dry. However, going by the time and month (closing of accounts), the fire has broke out, senior police officers are not ruling out insiders hand in causing the mishap. They also suspect that a few workers at godown might have shifted valuables goods elsewhere and sold them to make money. They might have lit fire to the remaining less valuables goods to give a report to the government that all goods were destroyed in the fire mishap, police said.
Timely arrival
Timely arrival of the fire tenders played a major role in controlling the fire immediately. “There were allegations that the traffic police did not ensure free movement of fire tenders when a major fire broke out in Carlton Towers on February 23. An action plan was prepared as to how the police and fire departments should carry out duties in a coordinated way whenever such incident occurred. The action plan was given to both the departments. As soon as we received the news about the fire, we banned vehicular movement from ASC Circle to Trinity Circle to facilitate for the fire tenders to reach the spot at the earliest,” said Shankar M Bidari, City Police Commissioner.“Goods were stored in all the three floors. Fire broke out in the second floor only. Timely arrival of the fire tender and immediate action ensured that the fire did not reach out to the first floor,” said fire force director BG Chengappa.

Fire Dept seeks aerial platform system

In the wake of Carlton Towers’ fire mishap, the Fire and Emergency Services Department has submitted a proposal to the State Government seeking an aerial platform system for Bangalore, Mangalore and Mysore cities.
The aerial platform system is a mechanical device used to provide temporary access or equipment to people stranded in unreachable areas. It is used by firefighters for emergency access. According to sources in the fire department, there are many high-rise buildings in these cities and the aerial platform systems will help fire personnel rescue people trapped in these buildings during emergencies. The department has also sought helicopter services from Air Force and HAL in situations similar to that of Carlton Towers.

Fire at Shanti Nagar bus depot

Materials stored in scrap yard catch fire; no casualties but the fire once again shows how government agencies are unprepared to fight such emergencies
The scrap yard at BMTC Central Work Depot at Shanti Nagar was a blazing pile on Wednesday after materials stored in the depot caught fire. Only a week after the tragedy at Carlton Towers, the BMTC scrap yard, which stored oil filters, empty oil tanks and scrapped rubber tyres, caught fire that took fire fighters close to five hours to put out. While no lives were lost, officials are yet to ascertain the exact reason for the fire.
Rules violated
The government, which has proposed stringent safety measures for all private buildings, seems to have flouted its own rules in the scrap yard, resulting in the fire.“The scrap yard, which is close to an acre, stores material that are combustible in nature. The ideal safety measure for such a site is a ring man hydrant system, which basically means there is a water pipe running around the parameter of the compound wall. This helps the fire department to control the flames more quickly. That system is not in place here,” said J H Ravi Shankar, regional fire officer, Bangalore South Range.
Families at peril
The scrap yard fire filled the 90-odd KSRTC and BMTC employees’ quarters buildings in its vicinity with smoke. “At around 12.15 pm in the afternoon, we saw a lot of smoke and had no clue. The fire brigade rushed in at around 12.30 pm and started operations,” says Janakamma, whose husband works with the department as a mechanic. The residents allege that they had spoken to officials about the scrap yard and the danger it posed to the houses that line it, but officials as usual failed to listen. The yard had over 100 empty oil tanks and hundreds of oil filters, both of which have sizeable quantity of residual oil, and the danger is compounded by the electrical line that runs overhead. “Though our husbands work with the department, we are absolutely helpless,” said one lady. The officials at BMTC have promised to look into all aspects of the matter. Arun Chakravarthy, director-security, Vigilance and Environment, BMTC, said the department would look into the matter and set right any irregularities. “We do not store this much scrap usually. But from what my officials say, there have been few takers for the waste material,” he said.
