MYSORE: A 70-year-old homemaker was killed when firecrackers stored at her residence exploded in Badanawalu, about 35 km from Mysore, on Monday.

The fire broke out at around 10.30am and Shivananjamma, who was stranded inside, died of burn injuries, said police. Her husband Nanjaiah, daughter Puttananji and two daughters-in-law escaped with minor injuries. Nanjaiah was rescued by neighbours.

The fire department personnel removed her charred body around 10.45am. The entire operation to douse the blaze took about 2 hours. The incident also damaged two neighbouring houses.

Other family members - Shivananjamma's sons and grandchildren - were not at home when the tragedy struck.

Police said the family has been manufacturing firecrackers for decades. "As per a preliminary investigation, only a small quantity of gunpowder and firecrackers were stored at the house. We're yet to know the exact cause of the tragedy," said DySP S G Vijaykumar.
